REHABILITATION OF GOLDSTAR BRIDGE

BES is providing Design services for the rehabilitation of the Northbound Goldstar Memorial Bridge, the largest bridge in Connecticut (CT). This 5 lane bridge is a1.2 mile-long structure carrying almost 60,000 vehicles crossing the Thames River, multiple railroad tracks, and local roads between New London and Groton, CT. This rehabilitation contract calls for immediate replacement of the bridge deck, structural repair to the bridge superstructure, and preservation measures for the bridge substructure to enhance and extend the life of this major bridge.  BES is supporting the Prime Consultant, HNTB, with BES’s experienced and knowledgeable team of Design Engineers and Support Staff. BES’ scope of work includes final approach and moment slab design plans for the bridge. Specifically, the existing west approach slab will be replaced through its limits extending from the west abutment to the end of the wingwall. Further, the existing contract drawings do not show evidence of an existing approach slab on the east approach. A new concrete approach slab will be designed for the mainline and the Exit 85 Ramp. BES is also providing quantity calculations and technical special provisions for this task. Our Engineers are evaluating the existing west and east approach wingwalls for a new barrier height and transition to tie-in with the existing approach barrier.  BES is also responsible for Overhead Sign Structure (OHSS) design plans. Three existing bridge-mounted sign structures are being designed and replaced with truss-type overhead structures by our expert team. We are also performing structural evaluations of existing bridge-mounted OHSS at other locations on the bridge and providing quantity calculations and technical special provisions as well as evaluating the existing OHSS with independent foundations.
